After a boat load of research into the history of the area the Inner West invited artists, based on their research, to submit proposals for a site specific art installation. Joe Hursts' concept was a Nawi (bark canoe) they were once made from the Yellow Stringy Bark trees that lined the Cooks River. The Nawi helped Aboriginals navigate the rivers and assisted them with fishing and foraging for muscles, cockles and oysters.
Nawi is a 2019 art instillation and resides near the water within Steel Park.
