The sculpture is inspired by the work of Australian painter Russell Drysdale.
It depicts a drover and his horse. Like many drovers, back before modern infrastructure and transportation, the task of crossing rivers and marshes occasionally resulted in the loss of life.
Often unforeseen currents, submerged dangers and thick muddy bogs prevented droves from reaching the far side of any crossing they required to cross.
This sculpture, 'The Drover and Horse' by Cory Thomas is another sculpture along the Sculptures of the Long Paddock and the second artwork for Mathoura. It's located at the Long Paddock Visors Centre.
