Meet Melpomene the Greek muse of Tragedy.
This statue is sadly a recast of the Original which was tragically vandalized in Sept 2000. The report indicats the base of the pedestal was never mounted down allowing for the monument to be pushed over causing significant damage to her head. Melpomene was recast and reinstalled in 2005.
The original statue was donated to the city in 1892 by Alderman Charles Schmiedt the proprietor of the Albury Hotel. At the time Melpomene was the only humanoid figure in Albury's Public Art collection.
