One of seventy-two large aquatic sea creatures created by MotherWorks for the opening ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
For every country that competed in the Games an aquatic sea creature, native to that country was created and floated across 36 barges down the Yarra River in an amazing sound and light display
After the Commonwealth Games concluded 62 of the sculptures were offered to councils through out Victoria to boost tourism. Many of the sculptures found permanent homes and sadly, since the sculptures weren't designed for the outdoor elements, between the Yarra River and councils placing them outdoors, many sculptures perished.
The manager of this facility almost said no to me taking a photo. I'm not sure if it was the other photos of fish I'd taken that convinced him to allow me to do so or the offer to let him review my photos once taken. Either way, he stood a meter away, let me take a few photos and checked them afterwards. Nice enough Man! A little awkward but I got my photo! Thank you Maribyrnong.
When I first researched this sculpture I found a photo of the fish on a stand and it looked to be in their gym area. I was surprised to see it hanging on the wall and lit up with a back light. It was a wonderful display and a real credit to the facility. It's lovely to see a facility taking extravagant care of their sculptures.
